From humble beginnings in a Columbia University dorm room to the heart of Silicon Valley, Meta’s story is rich with disruption.

 


2012

December

It all starts in a dorm room…

Meta co-founder and CEO Meron Gribetz conceives a world without screens while studying at Columbia University under Professor of Computer Science Steve Feiner.

In December 2012, Meta Co. is founded. The first prototype of an AR headset is hacked together with a pair of 3D glasses from Epson and is fused together with an Intel-made camera that tracks hand movements.


2013

May

Kickstarter campaign

On May 17, 2013 Meta launches a crowdfunded Kickstarter campaign, which resulted in 501 backers pledging $194,444 out of a $100,000 goal.

August

Y Combinator

In the summer of 2013, Meta was honored to be inducted into Y Combinator’s seed accelerator program.

Around this time, AR pioneers Steve Mann and Steve Feiner joined Meron and the team as trusted advisors.


2014

September

The Meta 1

In September 2014, Meta unveils the Meta 1 Development Kit with a live medical demo at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco, and starts shipping its first product. Meta 1 customers consisted of many developers, AR enthusiasts, and Fortune 500 companies including Boeing, Toyota, and Caterpillar.


2015

January

$23 million Series A round

Fueled by the success of the first-generation product, Meta announces a $23 million Series A round led by Horizons Ventures, Tim Draper, BOE Optoelectronics, Garry Tan, and Alexis Ohanian. Danhua Capital, Commodore Partners, and Vegas Tech Fund also participate.


2016

February

 

TED

After collecting feedback from developers around the world, Meron unveils the second-generation product at TED on February 17, 2016.


March

The Meta 2

On March 2, 2016, Meta starts accepting pre-orders for the second-generation headset. The Meta 2 Development Kit offers an industry-leading field of view, crisp 2.5K resolution, and direct hand interactions (without the need for special gestures) with holograms.


June

$50 million Series B round

On June 13, 2016, Meta announces another $50M in venture funding from Lenovo, Tencent, Banyan Capital, Comcast Ventures, and GQY.


December

Meta 2 starts shipping

On December 14, 2016, Meta started shipping the first units of the Meta 2 Development Kit to early Beta customers.

Customers receiving Meta 2 units in this first shipment include select individual and enterprise developers who are working closely with Meta to explore the headset’s exciting capabilities, and to create compelling market-specific applications across a number of use cases.

Meta’s fearless leader worked in an elite technological unit in the Defense Forces. Subsequently, Meron studied Computer Science and Neuroscience at Columbia University. On the heels of Meta’s explosive start, he was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in Technology, Wired’s list of 25 Geniuses Who Are Creating the Future of Business, and MIT Technology Review’s Innovators Under 35.
