Harvard Design School Experience Architecture Course

Peter Chernack instructs at Harvard

The Course:

"Experience Architecture" unites NARRATIVE CONTENT and MEDIA TECHNOLOGY to offer a compelling approach to the built environment. This design orientation focuses on the guest experience, and highlights the potential for architects to integrate information and other forms of content into their design vocabulary. It is influencing the development of retail and brand environments, museum attractions, cultural destinations, and main streets across the country. Experience Architecture represents a new set of values that confront designers with issues of relevance, and the ability of their work to communicate ideas and emotions.

Experience Architecture translates what we have learned from 150 years of world's fairs, guest venues, and the theatrical arts-- into mainstream design assignments. A hybrid designer is emerging, using environmental narratives as a design expression and applying a fresh list of creative priorities to buildings, landscapes, and civic places. These projects advocate a new relationship between form and substance, and require a heightened degree of collaboration among the design, media, and content disciplines. Architects are now faced with the challenge of understanding how the growing "experience economy", with its intangible assets of pleasure and immersion, can be rendered into successful projects.

The emphasis on content-based environments is resetting expectations about both building performance and design practice. Responding to this changing marketplace, we will investigate the following topics: How can designers engage in and profit from this emerging field? Do the values of experience design affect the authenticity of architecture? How can narrative structure and media technology enhance the meaning of the places we make?

This seminar presents insider viewpoints and a practical course of action for architects, developers and their consultants wishing to compete in this arena. It features case studies, noted guest speakers, and a reference binder for access to industry resources.

The proceedings will be aired on NPR's Smart City, hosted by Carol Coletta.
